Hollyhock seeds — towering spires of cottage colour

Hollyhocks are the grand old giants of the cottage garden — tall spires of saucer-shaped flowers that stand against walls and at the back of borders all summer. The species is gathered under Alcea rosea within our flower seed range, grown as a biennial among our biennial flowers. New to flowers? Our flower growing guide covers the basics.

Hollyhocks are sown to flower the following year — the calendar shows the timing.

Tall, dramatic and bee-friendly

Single and double forms reach two metres or more, in pink, red, white, yellow, apricot and near-black. As members of the mallow family their open flowers are a magnet for bees, so they feature among our bee-friendly and pollinator flowers, and they self-seed to return.

Growing hollyhocks from seed

Sow in early summer to flower the next year, or in spring to flower a little later. Give them deep, rich soil, full sun and shelter from wind, and stake the tall spikes in exposed spots. Leave a few seed heads and they'll self-seed happily.

Love tall, bee-friendly flowers? Here's where to look next.
