Pepper seeds — sweet and hot

From mild, crunchy bells to fiery chillies, peppers reward a warm, sunny spot with a long, colourful harvest. Grow sweet peppers for salads and roasting and chillies for heat, in the ground, a greenhouse or a pot. Botanically Capsicum annuum, they are tender but very rewarding from seed.

New to growing veg? Our guide covers sowing, planting and feeding for a heavy crop.

How to grow peppers from seed

Peppers need warmth and a long season, so sow indoors early — from late winter — and be patient, as they can be slow to germinate. Pot on, harden off and plant out after the last frost in the sunniest spot you have, then keep them fed once fruiting for the heaviest crop.

Sweet, hot and in between

For salads and stuffing, grow sweet peppers and paprika; for heat, chillies from mild to scorching; for tapas, padrón peppers. Peppers sit within our fruiting vegetables and all vegetable seeds.

Sweet, smoky or scorching — browse the wider fruiting-vegetable range or turn up the heat with chillies.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I sow pepper seeds?
Sow indoors from late winter to early spring — peppers need a long, warm season to ripen a good crop.
Why are my pepper seeds slow to germinate?
Peppers like real warmth (around 21–25°C); a propagator or heat mat speeds up and evens out germination.
What is the difference between sweet peppers and chillies?
Sweet peppers are mild and crunchy; chillies carry heat from gentle to fiery — both grow the same way.
Can I grow peppers in pots?
Yes — they do very well in pots in a sunny, sheltered spot or a greenhouse.
Do you ship across the EU?
Yes, orders ship from Meppel in the Netherlands with fast EU delivery, and the final shipping cost is shown at checkout.
