Limonium — statice and sea lavender

Limonium is the botanical genus that gives us both statice and sea lavender — sun-loving plants whose airy, papery flower clusters hold their colour for months, making them the gold standard among everlastings. The familiar annual form is gathered under statice within our flower seed collection.

History & origin

The genus is found on coasts and salt steppes across the world, from Mediterranean cliffs to inland salt flats. That wild, sun-baked, salty heritage explains why these plants are so tough, drought-proof and undemanding in the garden.

The name Limonium comes from the Greek leimon, meaning “meadow,” a reference to the salt meadows where the wild species naturally grow.

Botanical characteristics

Limonium species range from bushy annuals to wiry-stemmed perennials, all forming basal rosettes topped with branching sprays of tiny, crisp, long-lasting flowers in purple, blue, rose, yellow and white. Built for heat and poor, sharply drained soil, they are among our most reliable drought-tolerant flowers and a cornerstone of our dried flowers.

Growing Limonium from seed

Sow under cover in early spring and plant out after the last frost, in full sun and free-draining soil; it relishes heat and coastal exposure. Cut stems for drying when most of the flowers in a spray are open. Our flower growing guide and flower sowing calendar cover the timing.
