Pumpkin seeds — from giant carvers to sweet eating types

Pumpkins are the showstoppers of the autumn garden — from giants for carving to small, sweet culinary types for soups and pies. They're a favourite in our gourds and squash range and a brilliant crop to grow with children. New to growing? Our vegetable growing guide has the basics.

Plan for Halloween. Pumpkins need a long season to size up — the calendar shows when to start.

Carving vs eating pumpkins

Big carving pumpkins are mostly grown for size and show, while smaller culinary types have dense, sweet flesh for the kitchen. Many belong to the Cucurbita maxima family; for more storing types see our winter squash, and for tender, quick crops our summer squash.

Growing a big pumpkin

Plant into very rich soil (our soil guide helps), water and feed generously (see the feeding guide), and limit each plant to a few fruit for maximum size. Rest ripening fruit on a tile to keep it clean and dry.

Growing with kids? Few crops thrill children like a pumpkin swelling through summer.

Popular vegetable categories: Cucurbita maxima · Winter Squash · Summer Squash · Courgette · Gourds & Squash

At SeedsChoice, every order ships from Meppel, NL with fast, tracked EU delivery.
